“When we treat people merely as they are, they will remain as they are. When we treat them as if they were what they should be, they will become what they should be.”
Thomas S. Monson
In fall of 2017 we started the mentoring group, Charlotte Heights with the men's basketball team (JV and Varsity) at Garinger High School. Every Monday after school we meet with the student athletes for about an hour and we attend as many games as we can. The goal of this program is to establish positive relationships with the student athletes and work with them to help them achieve their academic, athletic and life goals.
The program came to fruition after one the boys from this team was killed this summer in a shooting. Too many young men are becoming victims of gun violence, too many young men are around a life that can slam doors open to them and too many of these young men have experienced significant trauma in their lives and a lot have not had truly positive and tangible role models that they can count on.
Our team of mentors aspires to create a family like atmosphere in which these young men can thrive and know their dreams are not unreachable as long as they are willing to put in the work!
