“When we treat people merely as they are, they will remain as they are. When we treat them as if they were what they should be, they will become what they should be.”
Thomas S. Monson
In fall of 2017 we started the mentoring group, Charlotte Heights with the men's basketball team (JV and Varsity) at Garinger High School. The program was started after the first year of Camp Fusion, learning that two of our campers were academically ineligble and one was straying down the wrong path after his best friend was shot and killed.
Every Monday after school we meet with the student athletes for about an hour and we attend as many games as we can as well as go camping, hiking and other outings. In 2018 the boys started reading with 3rd graders at Shamrock Gardens Elementary School. In 2019 we started a basketball team at the elementary school and teamed them up with Garinger boys, giving them the opportunity to mentor and give back!
The goal of this program is to establish positive relationships with the student athletes and work with them to help them achieve their academic, athletic and life goals. Our team of mentors aspires to create a family like atmosphere in which these young men can thrive and know their dreams are not unreachable as long as they are willing to put in the work!
